Finish the Fentanyl Fight: It’s Time to Make Our Progress Permanent

The fight against fentanyl has reached a decisive turning point. Under President Trump’s strong and uncompromising leadership, America has taken bold action to dismantle the networks responsible for the deadliest drug crisis in our nation’s history. But while major victories have been achieved, unfinished business remains—and inaction could cost thousands of lives.

Historic Progress Under Strong Leadership

In just months since the 2025 inauguration, overdose deaths across the United States have dropped by an unprecedented 33%, marking the sharpest decline in decades. Fatalities linked to synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, have fallen dramatically. Border enforcement, empowered by advanced technology and tougher penalties, has led to record seizures—enough fentanyl intercepted to prevent billions of potential deaths

The administration’s multi-layered approach is working. Executive Order 14157 officially designated major Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, freezing over $500 million in assets and increasing interdiction rates by 50%

The HALT Fentanyl Act, signed into law on July 16, 2025, permanently classified fentanyl as a Schedule I substance, ensuring the harshest legal consequences for traffickers—with 10-year mandatory minimum sentences for those distributing this lethal poison.

A Proven Strategy That Saves Lives

The results speak for themselves. By combining strong trade measures, enhanced border control, and expanded access to lifesaving naloxone, fentanyl-related deaths have dropped below 90,000 annually for the first time in years.

  • Tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada have pressured foreign suppliers to curb illicit chemical exports.

  • Cutting-edge border detection systems have closed critical gaps used by smugglers.

  • Wider naloxone availability has turned bystanders into lifesavers in communities nationwide.

This multi-pronged plan has proven that decisive leadership and accountability—not complacency—save lives.

Unfinished Business: Preventing a Deadly Reversal

But the mission is not complete. Key temporary scheduling provisions for fentanyl analogues are set to expire on September 30, 2025. Without immediate congressional action, these dangerous variants could slip through legal loopholes—undoing the progress America has fought so hard to achieve.

Pending Republican-led fentanyl bills will make the current safeguards permanent—ensuring that every analogue remains illegal, every trafficker faces justice, and every American community remains protected.

These proposed laws would:

  • Impose life sentences on high-level fentanyl dealers and distributors.

  • Sanction Chinese suppliers who enable cartel production pipelines.

  • Classify fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, reflecting its catastrophic potential.

Time to Act: Every Day Counts

The fentanyl crisis is not just a public health emergency—it is a national security threat. Every delay invites new victims and emboldens the criminals who profit from human misery.

Congress must act now to pass these fentanyl bills and finish the fight for good. The American people have already shown their support, with over 584,000 actions taken nationwide urging lawmakers to stand firm.
